The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War
(1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local
organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many
arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans'
pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.
In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed
organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign
Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado
and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum.
On a cold winter day on February 13th, 1925, Veterans in Crawford County established our VFW Post and named it Robert Jack. Robert gave his life on September 22, 1918 during the waning hours of the Battle of St. Mihiel in France. Consequently, we are the "Oldest VFW Post in Arkansas"!
Since then, Our mission has been to serve the Veterans, Citizens, and our community's youth of Van Buren and the surrounding communities with programs like OPERATION: Daily Battle, Hiking For Mental Health, Gaming Against PTSD, our Voices of Democracy and Patriot's Pen youth essay contests, helping our food insecure Veterans and families with food, assistance with bills, and wheelchair accessible ramps.
